Use of Sustainable Materials for ESC Practices

Follow-up Case Example Interview Questions

This interview is to help develop a clear understanding on how your state DOT is transitioning to sustainable ESC materials.

Several of the questions within the survey allowed the respondent to answer “Other”. This follow-up interview allows for additional discussion regarding those questions.

Drivers, Motivation, & Goals:

  1. Roughly how long ago did your DOT begin to move away from plastic-based ESC products?
  2. What have been the major drivers for reducing/eliminating ESC products containing plastics?
  3. Does your DOT have a target date to be plastic free?

Installation, Operation, & Maintenance:

  1. From field observations, what plastic-based ESC products (top 2 or 3) appear to have the most negative impact on the environment and/or wildlife?
  2. For these plastic-based products, what alternatives has your DOT implemented?
  3. Have the alternative ESC products performed adequately?
  4. Have the alternative ESC products required additional installation oversight and/or maintenance?

Challenges:

  1. Has it been a challenge identifying plastic-free ESC products?
  2. Has it been a challenge sourcing plastic-free ESC products?

Forward Development:

  1. What advice might you offer other state DOT agencies looking to move away from plastic-based ESC products?
