Statement of Task

An ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize workshops and provide a letter report on topics selected through consultation with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). Topics will be related to BOEM’s aspiration to achieve “first-in-class” status for the use-inspired science program within their Environmental Studies Program. Examples of such topics may include:

  1. Defining the “class” that BOEM’s Environmental Studies Program fits within, and identify peer agency programs.
  2. What are metrics for progress and success for BOEM’s Environmental Studies Program and similar programs within peer agencies throughout the federal government?
  3. What can be learned from peer science programs, including how they are evaluated and their processes for supporting use-inspired science?
