A workshop will explore changes since the 2012 publication of Discipline-Based Education Research: Understanding and Improving Learning in Undergraduate Science and Engineering. Participants will discuss the lessons learned and potential future opportunities.
Description
A planning committee of the National Academies will organize a workshop that explores progress in Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) since the 2012 publication of Discipline-Based Education Research: Understanding and Improving Learning in Undergraduate Science and Engineering. The workshop will explore the following questions:

What have been the major changes in DBER since the report release? Is the definition of DBER in the report still appropriate? How can that definition be improved given new work and new perspectives?

To what extent have the recommendations in the report been accomplished? Are the recommendations that have not been accomplished still appropriate goals in 2024? What would be needed to achieve these goals?

What is the current state of the DBER workforce? What skills are most useful for engaging in DBER?

What are the current needs of the DBER community in order to continue to grow successfully?
- What is the current state of interdisciplinary DBER?
- What are possible visions of a thriving DBER community? What are potential strategies that can lead towards that vision?
