Board on Animal Health Sciences, Conservation, and Research
With the ultimate goal to support the health of both animals and humans, BAHSCR provides science-based guidance on research with animals in laboratory and clinical settings, wild and semi-wild environments, zoological institutions and aquaria, and clinical settings. Built on the strong foundation of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR), BAHSCR examines innovative animal models and alternative research approaches; advises on care and use of animals in research in humane and evidence-informed ways; and enhances understanding of the need for animal studies.

Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a standing committee on animal health, conservation, and research to inform scientific and policy discussions related to animal health and their biodiversity, ecosystems, and conservation. The committee will conduct various activities that focus on responsible and scientifically rigorous approaches to research involving animal health-focused research in veterinary institutions, zoological institutions and aquaria, and wild and semi-wild environments. In its work, the committee will explore various topics affecting research and its applications to animal health and ecosystems. Specifically, the standing committee will explore:
- Research advances and their translation to decision-making, veterinary practice, health, and conservation.
- Use of emerging technologies for studying animal health in the wild.
- Development and use of artificial intelligence models and other computational approaches for studying animal health and welfare, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
- Animal welfare for wildlife-focused research activities.
- New approach methods (new alternative methods) for research with animals for animal health, including in wild and semiwild environments, zoological institutions, and aquaria.
- Challenges and solutions for addressing ecosystem-level issues that include animal and human populations.
Any related products from workshops or other activities would be developed by committee members and/or rapporteurs associated with separately approved, ad hoc planning committees for those activities. Written products will follow relevant National Academies’ review policies.
