A Workshop on International Practices in K-12 Mathematics Education: The Role of Computational Thinking, Data Science, and AI

Padmanabhan Seshaiyer

Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer is a Professor and Director at George Mason University where he has served in multiple leadership positions including the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of the STEM Accelerator Program and Director of the Center for Outreach in Mathematics Professional Learning and Educational Technology. He has also served as a Program Director at the NSF and currently serves as the Chair of the US National Academies Committee for Mathematics Instruction. He is also an appointed member on two different boards reporting to the Governor of Virginia including the STEM Education Advisory Board and the Workforce Development Board.
His research interests are in the broad areas of Computational Mathematics, Machine Learning, Data Science, Biomechanics, Computational Thinking, Mathematical Modeling, Design Thinking, STEM education and Teacher Professional Development.
In April 2019, he was selected as one of the “Figures that Matter” for his contributions to Academia and Society and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Vrije Universiteit Brussels. Dr. Seshaiyer also was one of the lead members on a taskforce from Virginia that helped to establish the first-ever high school data science standards, curriculum and course as new post-secondary pathways that is approved by the Virginia Board of Education.

Lindsey Henderson

Lindsey Henderson currently serves as the Policy Director, Mathematics for the national non-profit ExcelInEd. Prior to that, she worked as the Secondary Mathematics Specialist for the Utah State Board of Education. She is passionate about providing rich learning opportunities for all Utah mathematicians where learners are engaged in building and maintaining strong mathematical identities. She began her education career teaching all of the secondary maths for Salt Lake City School District. After her time in the classroom, she joined the Salt Lake City educational technology startup ecosystem where she built strong relationships to industry and honed her vision for relevant and meaningful mathematics for all. She returned to public education as the K-12 Mathematics Specialist for Davis School District where her ideas about humanizing mathematics for students were cultivated, supported, and allowed to flourish. Henderson is driven by a strong desire to provide relevant and meaningful mathematical experiences for students and educators through mathematical teaching, learning, and equity practices, and inquiry-based pedagogy.

Oh Nam Kwon

Oh Nam Kwon, a professor in the Department of Mathematics Education at Seoul National University, Korea, is an internationally renowned scholar with nearly 30 years dedicated to the study of inquiry-oriented education. She has wielded considerable influence over the national education curriculum, serving both as an advisory committee member for the Ministry of Education and the chair of the K-12 education committee for the Ministry of Science and ICT. Internationally respected in the field of mathematics education, Dr. Kwon has been an esteemed member of the editorial boards of top-tier journals and was a key member of the 2015 OECD/PISA Mathematics Expert Group. She has held the title of Honorary Professor at the Education University of Hong Kong since 2017. Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Kwon has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Medal of Merit. A significant highlight is her distinction as the first Asian to receive the 2021 Svend Pedersen Award from Stockholm University in Sweden. Dr. Kwon is currently serving as the President of the Korean Federation of Women’s Science and Technology Associations (KOFWST) and as the Vice President of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST). She is the president of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME).

Toh Tin Lam

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Hollylynne Lee

Dr. Lee is a Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Education in the STEM Education department at NC State University. She is also a Senior Faculty Fellow at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NC State. Her research interests include teaching and learning of probability, statistics, and data science, especially incorporating and designing technology environments that facilitate students’ learning in upper elementary through early college. She situates her work in educational design in order to provide the best learning opportunities for students in K-12, her university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and educators around the world that engage with her in online professional development for teaching statistics and data science. Dr. Lee is a fellow of the American Statistics Association and served on the National Academies planning committee for the workshop on Foundations of Data Science for Students in Grades K-12. In 2020 she was the recipient of the University of North Carolina’s Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and in 2022 earned the national-level Cherry Award for Great Teaching, awarded by Baylor University.

Sarah Schönbrodt

Sarah Schönbrodt is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Salzburg and part of the leadership team of the non-profit initiative KI macht Schule, which promotes AI education in schools across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. She also leads the Salzburg branch of the Computational and Mathematical Modeling Program (CAMMP), which provides high-school students with insight into real-world applications of mathematics.
Her primary research expertise lies in mathematics education, with a focus on mathematical modelling, AI education, and data science education in secondary and upper-secondary schooling. She works on making the mathematical foundations of modern AI and data-driven methods accessible at school level and designs, implements, and empirically evaluates innovative teaching-learning environments, including Jupyter-based materials and interactive web applications. She is an active member of international communities in mathematics and STEM education, regularly contributes to international conferences, and initiated the International Symposium on Integrating AI and Data Science into School Education Across Disciplines (AIDEA).
Sarah Schönbrodt studied mathematics and chemistry for teaching at RWTH Aachen University and received her doctorate in mathematics education from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Claudia Vargas Díaz

She directs the Mathematics Education Laboratory Museum (Museo Laboratorio de Didáctica de la Matemática) at the University of Santiago, Chile, where she is a full-time faculty member. She also serves on the Ethics Committee for the Humanities and Social Sciences area at the same institution.
Her research focuses on mathematical communication, problem solving, emotions toward mathematics, and teacher education, topics on which she has led nationally and internationally funded projects.
She has been a speaker at various mathematics education conferences and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-American Committee on Mathematics Education (IACME).
She holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Valparaíso (Chile), a Master's degree in Mathematics from the Universidad Católica del Norte (Chile), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain). She also holds postgraduate diplomas in Museology and in Neuroscience from the University of Santiago, Chile.

Richard Velasco

Dr. Richard Velasco is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Florida. His research interests include culturally relevant data science education, STEM teacher leadership, and informal STEM education. His current research project, funded by the Gates Foundation as part of the National Academy of Education's Equity in Math Education Research Grant program, partners with Indigenous CHamoru educators in Guam and Saipan to co-develop and implement culturally relevant data science modules for secondary math students in Micronesia. Prior to higher education, Dr. Velasco was a national board certified secondary math teacher for 12 years in Guam and Washington state and was a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching awarded by the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the White House. Dr. Velasco received a B.A. in Mathematics and Secondary Education from the University of Guam, an M.A.T. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Saint Mary, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in STEM education from Texas Tech University.

David Weintrop

David Weintrop is an Associate Professor and the Dean's Impact Professor in the Department of Teaching & Learning, Policy & Leadership in the College of Education with a joint appointment in the College of Information at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of effective, engaging, and equitable computational learning experiences. His work lies at the intersection of data science education, computer science education, and the learning sciences. He has designed and studied curricula on computational thinking, data science, and computer science in classrooms across K-12 grades. In support of his work, David received a National Academy of Education/Spencer postdoctoral fellowship and an NSF CAREER award. David holds a Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.

About

An international workshop to discuss how top performing countries mainly in secondary mathematics education are modernizing their math curriculums. Workshop participants will discuss processes, mechanisms, and best practices for revising secondary mathematics curriculums and identifying the necessary competencies to remain globally competitive. Invited international experts will discuss how the modernized curriculum is aligned with the technology in the classroom (learning environment), textbooks/educational materials, and instructional techniques (teaching and learning). A report summarizing the workshop discussion will be released by June of 2026.
