This workshop will explore the growing attention to protein as a component of a healthful diet and consider both the potential benefits and unintended consequences of increased protein intake.
Description
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a public workshop to explore the growing attention to protein as a component of a healthful diet. The workshop will review current recommendations for protein intake and explore emerging trends in protein consumption, including consumer understanding and demand, industry responses, and alignment with healthful dietary patterns and broader food system impacts.
The workshop will also consider both the potential benefits and unintended consequences of increased protein intake. Topics will include effects on overall nutrient intake and eating patterns; the availability and consumption of nutrients from other food sources; and implications for health outcomes and diet-related chronic disease risk across the lifespan and among specific populations. In addition, discussions will consider research gaps and implications for public policy.
The planning committee will define the specific topics to be addressed, develop the workshop agenda, and select and invite speakers and discussants. A proceedings of a workshop of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
