TRB Webinar: Unveiling the Art of Multimethod Sampling for Travel Surveys

April 4, 2024

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM (EDT)

Past

As the state of practice for travel surveys rapidly evolves and response rates continue to decline, researchers must often consider multimethod sampling to obtain responses from hard-to-reach populations. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Eastern that discussed the use of multimethod sample for travel surveys, including recruitment via community outreach, panels, and regional organizations or agencies to better reach populations of importance and increase representation. Presenters examined the decision-making process during the initial sample design phase and considerations for weighting data from multiple sources.

This webinar was sponsored by TRB’s Standing Technical Committee on Travel Survey Methods.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Multimethod sampling in the twin cities’ Travel Behavior Inventory – Jonathan Ehrlich, Metropolitan Council

  2. Multimethod sampling in the COVID Future Panel Survey – Deborah Salon, Arizona State University

  3. Reaching populations of importance through online probability panels – Jared Coopersmith, Ipsos

  4. Question and answer session moderated by Abigail Rosenson, RSG

The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants can:

  1. Identify how probability and non-probability samples can effectively complement one another in travel survey datasets

  2. Assess and evaluate existing methods and considerations for weighting multimethod samples

  3. Implement travel survey best practices from case studies that leveraged multimethod sampling techniques

Professional Development Hours
