The talk will focus on some of the challenges of creating tunnels in the complex geology beneath central London, whilst also preventing overlying buildings from being damaged by subsidence. Some innovations will be described, ranging from a novel approach to compensation grouting for protecting buildings, tunnelling directly beneath and through piled foundations, to fibre optic strain measurement to improve understanding of the behaviour of sprayed concrete tunnel linings.

Site characterization and infrastructure design and modeling practices related to addressing corrosion of buried steel are often driven by standards used for efficiency and reproducibility, but likely derived from practices developed for different purposes. Many of those standards are not informed by empirically based knowledge about how given conditions affect corrosivity, and they generally do not consider how the combined effects of subsurface physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of the complex subsurface environment affect corrosivity. In this webinar, the speakers will summarize the major conclusions and recommendations in a new National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Corrosion of Buried Steel at New and In-Service Infrastructure. The webinar will describe the two major approaches to addressing corrosion in steel, and will describe short- and long-term practices and research that could improve understanding of the corrosivity of the subsurface and the long-term maintenance of steel infrastructure.

This meeting will explore the causes and consequences of static liquefaction. Several recent and notable disasters involving mine collapse of tailings dams, like those at Brumadinho in Brazil, and Fundão in Brazil, or water reservoir dams such as the Edenville dam in Michigan have raised questions about static liquefaction failures and how they might be avoided. Presentations and discussions will span a range of technical and societal topics, including a more comprehensive view of the long-term consequences of static liquefaction failures and the associated ethical uncertainties faced by geotechnical engineers, dam owners, regulators, and the affected public. An important objective of the meeting is to identify areas in which the National Academies might contribute to inform responsible decision making.

COGGE Webinar Series

Modern geospatial technologies such as lidar, structure from motion photogrammetry, InSAR, global navigation satellite systems, and robotic total stations have dramatically improved the efficiency, resolution, accuracy, and precision for obtaining measurements. These technologies have been effectively used by practitioners and researchers worldwide for many applications within geotechnical investigations including topographic mapping, dam stability monitoring, landslide mapping, quantity calculations, and settlement monitoring. Nevertheless, despite the fact that these technologies are commonplace to some, barriers such as awareness, training, and initial costs have limited their widespread use. This webinar will explore examples of how these technologies are effectively used in practice, the capabilities and limitations of the technology, and considerations for selecting which technologies are most suitable for a project. Panelists will come from industry, government, and academic backgrounds with diverse experience in geotechnical applications.
