The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Roundtable on Obesity Solutions convened a workshop to uncover practical strategies to interventions for obesity. Experts explored the connections between structural racism, health communication, biased mental models/social norms, and obesity, and their interactions with the evidence base and workforce.
As the first workshop in a series, Translating Knowledge of Foundational Drivers of Obesity into Practice, audience members viewed several presentations and discussions exploring the aforementioned gaps in knowledge, future research in evidence-based solutions, and potential ways to translate current evidence to facilitate action. The event's final product, a causal systems map that depicted not only the drivers of obesity but also potential evidence-based solutions, was used to determine three crosscutting priority areas that the roundtable has since pursued, including through a three-part workshop series in 2021 - structural racism, biased mental models and social norms, and effective health communication.
