Description
At the request of the State Department’s Biosecurity Engagement Program, an ad hoc planning committee will organize and implement a five day international conference for approximately 100 participants designed to promote safe and secure biological sciences research in the Middle East and South Asia (MESA) region. The conference will bring together MESA region subject matter experts to present on the topics, lead breakout groups, and hold panel discussions to address common cross-country issues. It is expected that the majority of conference participants will be from Pakistan. The conference will include a selection of biological science topics, all viewed through the lens of responsible science, which may include One Health, next generation diagnostics, and emerging infectious diseases of concern in the region. The combination of substantive discussions of ongoing research and discussions of how best to carry out the research safely and securely will encourage experts to share their experiences, lessons learned, and visions for advancing the biological sciences in their home nations. There will not be a summary report of the conference, but conference materials will be made available on a website that is being developed to showcase other Academies activities in the region.
