TRB Webinar: Improving Data Sharing in Disaster Response with Geospatial Data and AI

July 8, 2024

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (EDT)

Past

During a disaster, the lack of interoperable, shareable, analysis-ready data managed by emergency organizations limits data sharing and the creation of common reference pictures in areas and populations. Collaborative strategic decisions are then limited since they are not based on commonly agreed vulnerability indicators. Emerging artificial intelligence (AI) and geospatial technology applications can bridge these limitations by creating knowledge bases with geospatial context. TRB hosted a webinar on Monday, July 8, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern with timely insights into transformational tools for emergency management through enhanced data interoperability and situational awareness. These tools empower stakeholders to make more informed, collaborative decisions in critical scenarios.

This webinar is sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committees on Disaster Response, Emergency Evacuations, and Business Continuity, Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing Applications, and Geographic Information Science.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Leveraging emerging technologies at state DOTs – Hari Sripathi, Virginia Department of Transportation

  2. A taxonomy of AI solutions for disaster response, emergency evacuations, and business continuity – Alan Leidner, NYC Geospatial Information Systems and Mapping Organization

  3. Generative AI and synthetic data for privacy-compliant disaster vulnerability assessment – Antonio Correas, Skymantics, LLC

  4. Question and answer session moderated by Prashant Shukle, Open Geospatial Consortium

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the barriers and opportunities in leveraging interoperable geospatial data and AI for enhancing disaster response and climate change adaptation strategies

  2. Evaluate the applications and benefits of emerging technologies in improving situational awareness and privacy-compliant disaster vulnerability assessments

  3. Implement best practices and lessons learned from past major disasters to develop more effective emergency management solutions

Professional Development Hours

Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.

This webinar will be delivered as a scheduled – e-learning live event and is categorized within RCEP as Technical, Health and Safety.

Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.

TRB will report credits earned to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Complaints about registered providers may be sent to RCEP, 1015 15th Street, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, D.C., 20005.

American Institute of Certified Planners Certification Maintenance Credits

This webinar is approved by the American Planning Association (APA) for 1.5 Certification Maintenance (CM) Credits. CM credits provide continuing education opportunities for AICP Certified Planners to continue their professional skills and knowledge. To receive CM credits, Certified Planners should visit the TRB event webpage on American Planning Association and register their participation.

Please make sure that you register for this session and log in using the link that TRB provides to your email account. We use this as your record that you attended this session. TRB only maintains the records of attendees who use their email address to log into the webinar and cannot verify attendance of individuals who view the webinar without personally logging into the session.
