TRB Webinar: Pavement Foundations—Designing for 100 Years

May 30, 2024

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM (EDT)

Past

Pavement foundation deformation under asphalt or concrete surface layers cause damage at the surface and reduce service life. Extreme weather and seasonal climate change create additional uncertainty, making it difficult to estimate and reduce foundation degradation and deformation for life cycle assessment periods up to 100 years. TRB hosted a webinar on Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Eastern that provided examples of current technology that is enhancing highway resilience and improving long term performance by reducing pavement foundation deformation.

This webinar featured research from NCHRP Research Report 933: Evaluating Mechanical Properties of Earth Material During Intelligent Compaction.

This webinar was a follow-on to the 2024 TRB Annual Meeting Workshop 1058: Pavement Foundations: 100-Year Design Considerations.

This webinar was sponsored by TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program and the Standing Technical Committees on Mechanics and Drainage of Saturated and Unsaturated Geomaterials, Transportation Earthworks, and Stabilization of Geomaterials and Recycled Materials.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Design and construction to achieve long-lasting pavement – Nayyar Siddiki & Kumar Dave, Indiana Department of Transportation

  2. Role of quality management in extending pavement life – Soheil Nazarian, University of Texas, El Paso

  3. E-compaction for pavement foundations – David White, Ingios

  4. Question and answer session moderated by John Siekmeier, Affiliation

The first 60 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 30 minutes were reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants can:

  1. Understand how extreme weather and seasonal climate change create uncertainty during pavement system design

  2. Avoid poor design choices and expensive or ineffective pavement system design

  3. Reduce pavement foundation degradation and deformation for life cycle assessment periods up to 100 years

Professional Development Hours

This webinar was delivered as a scheduled – e-learning live event and is categorized within RCEP as Technical, Health and Safety.

Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned on completion of this program were reported to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Certificates of Completion are issued to all participants via the RCEP.net online system. Complaints about registered providers may be addressed to RCEP, 1015 15th Street, NW, 8th Fl., Washington, DC, 20005.
