Organized by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in partnership with the U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System, the seventh biennial Conference on the Marine Transportation System Innovative Science and Technologies Toward Greater Sustainability was held June 20-22, 2023 in Washington, D.C.. The conference aimed to disseminate and discuss the results of current research, practitioner experiences, and stewardship challenges with respect to the environmental sustainability of the U.S. marine transportation system (MTS). The conference identified research needs, barriers and potential progress related to overall environmental sustainability and decarbonization strategies including: the introduction of alternative fuels, vessel and port electrification, regulatory and governance reform, green technology implementation, beneficial and alternative use of dredged materials, and other environmental sustainability strategies. Particular emphasis was placed on lifecycle impacts, infrastructure requirements, vessel fleet considerations, and the necessary collaboration required among all MTS-related stakeholders and sectors.
