TRB Webinar: Safer Intersections for Pedestrians and Bicyclists

October 25, 2022

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM (EDT)

Past

What is the biggest challenge pedestrians and cyclists face on the road? For some it is navigating turning vehicles. For others it is waiting for excessively long red light times or determining unmarked or unclear paths through intersections, or inadequate sight distance. In designing intersections and infrastructures the most vulnerable road users need to be considered. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern that explored 20 performance measures, or design flags, that can help identify potential safety, accessibility, operational, or comfort issues for pedestrians and bicyclists. These design flags represent issues that can be addressed in the development and evaluation intersections and interchanges.

This webinar is based on NCHRP Report 948: Guide for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety at Alternative and Other Intersections and Interchanges.

This webinar was sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Performance Effects of Geometric Design.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  • The 20 flag method – Bastian Schroeder, Kittelson & Associates
  • Case study application – Shannon Warchol, Kittelson & Associates

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the 20-flag method to evaluate intersection safety for pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Assess design elements at alternative and conventional intersections that contribute to multimodal safety
